The Fifth and Sixth Levels enjoyed learning a poem by the American poet Gay Dowling, called “A Christmas Recipe”.
We watched a slideshow presentation of the poem, with images for each line of the poem. The students took turns reading each line of the poem. They also received a poem handout (just for fun, we included a Christmas drawing to color).
Then the students each got a handout of an actual recipe for Christmas cookies, Santa´s Swirl Sugar Cookies. Alongside the ingredients list, they had spaces to fill in the ingredient translations and amounts converted to the metric system.
As an extension of this activity, we also did a word search with words from the recipe (both the ingredients and the instructions).
